Leon County Circuit Judge Charles Dodson on Monday issued a temporary injunction against Florida Department of Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran’s July 6 mandate that classrooms reopen five days per week to in-person learning by August 31, finding that the order violated the state’s Constitution. “Our Florida Constitution requires the State to ensure our schools operate safely,” Dodson wrote in the decision. “Defendants, however, through the Order and its application, have essentially ignored the requirement of school safety by requiring the statewide opening of brick-and-mortar schools to receive already allocated funding....

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Karl Dresch, from Calumet to time served on Wednesday after he served the maximum sentence, six months, in prison for participating in the mob that stormed the Capitol. Dresch is to be released from jail after initially pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge following his arrest in January. Jackson said she believed the charge was fitting since his “actions didn’t match his rhetoric,” because he did not injure anyone or damage property on Jan....

The Biden administration filed a lawsuit seeking to chip away legally at Senate Bill 8, which was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. “Abortion care has almost completely stopped in our state,” Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi, a Texas abortion provider, told the U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee during a hearing over abortion access on Thursday.
