Rebecca Haynie and Donald Keith Phillips were charged with the killing of William Kirby Smith Jr., who was Haynie’s husband at the time, inside Kirby’s Speed Shop in Columbus. Prosecutors accused Haynie and Phillips, her alleged lover, of conspiring to kill Smith and ultimately shooting him twice. But Muscogee County Superior Court Judge Gil McBride dismissed their charges Wednesday, writing that the state’s delays in prosecuting Haynie and Phillips for the 2004 killing were unacceptable....

Trooper Christopher Baldner is accused of causing an SUV to flip, which ejected and killed 11-year-old Monica Goods on December 22, 2020. An Ulster County judge denied him bail on November 4. Baldner is also accused of pepper-spraying the vehicle that the Goods family occupied and ramming his car into theirs twice, causing it to flip. He has been indicted on charges of murder, manslaughter and reckless endangerment. Baldner’s lawyers had requested a $100,000 cash bail and home confinement, which the judge denied....

Newton District Court Judge Shelley Joseph and courtroom Deputy Wesley MacGregor are facing a trial after a federal appeals court declined to dismiss their case on February 28. They are accused of blocking an agent from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency from detaining a man that left the courtroom through a rear door, Reuters reported.
